Management competency

Demise of Competency and Emotional Intelligence journal

 End of an era

The current edition (Autumn 2006) of Competency and Emotional Intelligence is the last one to be published following a decision by its new owners, Reed Business Information, to drop the title. Although the journal was a specialised title, it had a loyal band of subscribers. There was also a significant group of human resource (HR) professionals who were prepared to share their knowledge and experience about: use of competency frameworks in performance management; thoughts on emotional intelligence; and ideas about leadership and innovation. Everyday practioners at the HR sharp end, management consultants, leading academic researchers and international business gurus were all past contributors to the journal.

Left a gap

Neil Rankin, the editor who first set up Competency and Emotional Intelligence, remains with the company editing other HR titles. However, there is a void left by the journal’s demise and, as a freelance business writer who provided about 40% of the copy for each edition, I thought it appropriate to set up this website to provide a forum for people to continue to comment on issues previously covered by Competency and Emotional Intelligence. Thank you to all of those people who, over the years, helped me write articles and case studies that demonstrated the latest developments in this field. Your candour and openness was appreciated and, together, I believe we’ve helped make behavioural competencies an essential and ubiquitous part of all human resource practises.

The story shouldn’t end here

In a recent interview with the quality programme manager of Investors in People UK, for the last edition of the journal, the interviewee expressed concern that many organisations that they are working with don’t take time to discuss or create a management competency framework, or even understand in practical terms what’s meant by management competencies. If that’s the case, then there is still a place for the exchange of ideas about management competencies, despite the journal no longer being able to carry out its previous good work.

Willing contributors needed

Are you willing to share your ideas on competencies and issues about emotional intelligence in the workplace? If so, please feel free to make use of this fledging website by adding your views and experiences to this new forum for management competencies. Alternatively, if you’d rather talk than write, contact me and let’s see if we can put together an article or case study that can be published on the site and shared with others.
